milan design week 2024

Curated by Tony Chambers and Maria Cristina Didero, the exhibition features newly commissioned works by Singapore’s most innovative designers, demonstrating how design can evolve to create a sustainable future. From reimagining sustainable design practices to addressing global challenges, participating designers push the boundaries of their creative practices to minimize environmental impact and reimagine production methods. Design Space AlUla (find more here) debuts at Milan Design Week, showcasing collaborations between Saudi and international designers including Zahrah Alghamdi, Leen Ajlan, Cristian Mohaded, Hall Haus, Leo Orta and many others. Design Space AlUla commissioned CLOUD/Studio Sabine Marcelis to design the show that highlights the theme Materia Natura, celebrating AlUla’s natural history and cultural heritage. Founded by architect Andrea Caputo, the space is envisioned as a cultural apparatus, an instrument for architects and designers to create a dialogue around imagining and creating better worlds. The auto-construction is accompanied by a diverse array of exhibitions, talks, experiments, high-energy DJ sets and sound explorations, as well as live architectural and design interventions.

The wood-like surface formed an X-shaped platform, inviting visitors to walk upon it while admiring the diverse materials. The colorful geometric motifs of the jockey silk, planted on the floor as an indoor installation, paid homage to Hermès’ heritage in leather goods and textiles. Accompanying these materials was the Hermès Collection Maison 2024, which included a new tableware collection called Tressages équestres.

Crafted in Bottega Veneta’s signature leatherwork and designed in a special charred-wood technique that draws on traditional Japanese methods. Each piece is meticulously enveloped in Bottega Veneta’s Intreccio foulard technique, meticulously hand-woven at the brands’ artisanal atelier. In the two-level Milan boutique of French luxury fashion house Lanvin, an array of the brand’s colorful Ballerina shoes and one jewel-encrusted Concerto Bag has found a temporary home during Salone del Mobile—all sitting atop sculptural benches and chairs, including one crafted from aluminum by Rooms Studio. Founded in the nation of Georgia by Nata Janberidze and Keti Toloraia in 2007, the architecture and design studio coupled these pieces with tall, slender, rough-hewn lamps with upturned glass shades reminiscent of a closed flower. Lanvin selected the two women behind Rooms Studio as design partners to mirror the trailblazing path of founding designer Jeanne Lanvin. At the Fendi Casa store opposite Teatro alla Scala, the brand unveiled its latest homewares collection in grand style—yet when you looked a little closer, the furniture offered a window into creative director Silvia Venturini Fendi’s more playful side.

For this arty piece showcased at the Rossana Orlandi Gallery, Périlhou partnered with basket weaver Audrey Bruneau, too. After bursting onto the Milan design scene in 2019 with their Transparency Matters collection, design duo Draga Obradovic and Aurel K. Basedow of Draga & Aurel will return this season with the new, ultra plush Parka sofa for Poltrona Frau. In the duo’s first project for Poltrona Frau, they pay homage to the famed jacket that in recent decades became the epitome of street style.

But all that changed in Milan this year, with the historic French atelier Saint-Louis’s latest lighting collection, Torsade. Designer Stefania di Petrillo has reimagined the rope as a series of playful U- and loop-shaped pieces that train the spotlight firmly on the exceptional skill behind hot twisting. Among the installations will be the 4321-market, which features souvenirs designed to symbolize the relationship between Switzerland and South Korea, and the Out of the Woodworks exhibitions.

The thick resin top, with its brightness and depth, reflects the outside world, changing, in turn, depending on the lights surrounding it. Milan Design Week godmother Rossana Orlandi opens her gallery’s doors to present some of the most promising upcoming talents from around the world. At the RO Gallery [Via Matteo Bandello 14, Map], Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek celebrates 15 years of collaboration with the gallery by presenting a new collection of sustainable and upcycled furniture in metal and wood. Studio Bycolor from Japan creates a forest of trees and leaves made from an innovative polycarbonate resin that doesn’t require the use of polluting varnishing. La Triennale di Milano design museum hosts an array of exhibitions open to the public from June 3. Curated by Christophe Raidl, Memphis Again explores the radical design movement founded by Ettore Sottsass in the 1980s.

Gucci (find more here) unveils Design Ancora, a project set to debut during Milano Design Week 2024 at the via Montenapoleone Flagship store. This initiative, led by Gucci’s Creative Director Sabato De Sarno, aims to explore the multifaceted concept of iconic design by presenting a special edition of five revered Italian design icons. These objects, symbolic of Italian heritage and particularly of Milanese culture, are reinterpreted to reflect contemporary relevance.

Floor-to-ceiling aluminum sheets and pink carpeting will reconfigure the brand’s flagship on Via Manzoni, known for its minimalist, even austere decor, turning it into an installation apt for showcasing new products. Marking the introduction of the first Valextra Spa repair, cleaning and polishing service, a life-size wellness center is being mounted inside the store as part of the overall installation, housing artisans at work. Tongue-in-cheek merchandise — including towels, sleeping masks and aluminum trays — has been developed by Studio Temp to mark the initiative.

Notably, organizers unveil an enhanced layout for the trade show, integrating human-centric pathways crafted through collaboration between architects and neuroscientists. Additionally, Salone del Mobile.Milano announces an installation by acclaimed American filmmaker David Lynch, located at Pavilions 5-7. Both brands are owned by craftsman Romeo Sozzi, who is also the CEO of both Lake Como-based companies. These haute couture furniture collections will showcase Sozzi’s own designs, including the small Battisti tables, which are a tribute to the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian.

Born in 1961 as a platform to showcase Italian furniture and now in its sixty-second edition, this event isn't merely a fair; it's a pilgrimage for the aesthetically inclined. If the red dot stickers visible across the majority of the pieces on display were anything to go by, the exhibition was a commercial hit, too. As the Salone del Mobile design fair opens its doors in the suburb of Rho this week, it served as the smoke signal that Milan Design Week has officially begun. And just as compelling as the furniture displays presented in the convention halls of Fiera Milano are the various Fuori Salone projects springing up around the city—many of them coming courtesy of the world’s most esteemed fashion houses.

Design Space Alula commissioned Cloud, the multidisciplinary practice founded by Paul Courne and artist Sabine Marcelis, for the scenography of the exhibition. Zegna is launching the “Born in Oasi Zegna” book through an exhibition open to the public from Tuesday to April 21 at Zegna headquarters. The book is full of images, illustrations, words and historic bits that tell the story of Oasi Zegna, a natural territory that covers an area of 38 square miles in the Biella Alps of Piedmont in northern Italy. At the beginning of the last century, founder Ermenegildo Zegna undertook a vast reforestation program, which now boasts more than 500,000 trees, in the mountain area surrounding his wool mill.
